visiting Big Daddy on Christmas

Most of you know how heartbroken I still am over my dad, I wonder most days if his death is something I will ever get over and get past. He was here, and then he was gone. I still can't believe he's gone and many days almost pick up the phone to call him before I catch myself. So on Christmas Day we all went to visit Big Daddy, and thought you would enjoy some pictures.

Christmas Day!

So so cute on Christmas morning. It was a bit of a hectic day, didn't get to even finish the gingerbread house, but the girls got some nice gifts, including 2 new skuut balance bikes from Grammy. Scott's mom earlier in the week gave them 2 tricycles which they can already ride. The balance bike is a bit tall for Tilly, but she loves to ride on it! Poppy is just about tall enough but doesn't always have the ability to concentrate on the ride. Thanks to cousin Andrea for the adorable Christmas night gowns--dont the girls look darling!

Tilly without Poppy

Adorable but so whiny! My little angel has turned into a A++ whiner--and I can hardly stand it. Not with my mom, just with me, sigh. She did really well though, being a only child for 3 whole days!

cute funny from my travel day with Tilly

So Tilly and I were killing time watching the planes on the runway last Sunday, when a 3 yo and 1yo came over to stare at the planes and the action from her spot. She seemed a bit miffed then they started screaming plane plane, bus bus--so it was alright. Anyways, the 3yo asked me where all the planes were going. I told him all over the world, so he looked at me right in the eyes and said "do you think they are going to grandma's house?"

Yes little man, I think most of the planes this week are going to grandma's house!

tree shopping

We slipped in a christmas tree shopping event Friday night even though I've been working 7 days a week. I'm trying to enjoy every day I have the girls, and do fun things even if I'd rather go home and collapse in bed. Time goes by so fast, you know. So we went tree shopping and out to dinner on Friday night--the girls were like wild animals at Firewood while we ate, thankfully all the lovely gay men in the Castro made a HUGE fuss over how cute the girls are so thy didn't seem to mind all the bad behavior.

so many country cousins

From the 6 Yates siblings--there are 17 living cousins. My grandparents William Raymond Yates and Mildred Lee Wilson Yates had Robert, Wilson and Frank, then Catherine, Malline and Frances, all of whom go by their middle names and not given names--a old southern tradition. Of course Robert died at the end of WWII, so the remaining 5 siblings had all 17 children. We took a picture at Aunt Margaret's funeral on the steps of Pleasant Grove--missing only 2 first cousins--Barry and Don, even though there are a few extra cousins in the picture (2nd cousins and 1st cousins once removed? how does that go again?)

I am the second youngest. Many of my cousins are grandparents, and have children not much younger than me. I thought everyone had crazy families like this -- I'm so sad for those who don't. I love my family!

Academy of Science pix

We finally went and joined the day after Thanksgiving and the place was a zoo, and in places very poorly designed. At one spot downstairs 2 strollers or a stroller and a wheelchair can't pass each other (this happened to us). It is actually a bit ridiculous considering this is a place that will host mostly families and kids, and cost a zillion dollars. Anyways, here are some cute pictures for you all to enjoy!

Aunt Margaret

So my great aunt died. For once there is nothing to be sad about with death. We will miss her, but we are not sad that she is gone. She was no longer happy here, and longed to be somewhere other than here. For some time now, she had been wanting to go home, to see her husband and her mother. She was 103 years 6 months and 18 days old. She was outliving the next generation.

It wasn't until we were at the graveside that I realized that this woman, who lived all those years is buried maybe 200 yards from where she was born. Exactly where she was born, in the old Yates homeplace that was built by her Grandfather, and more than likely where her father was born, and certainly where she was born, with her 2 sisters, Minnie Kate and Myrtie Mae, and her brother William Raymond, who was my grandfather. It was where my mom, aunts and uncles were all born too--where our family raised cotton among other things.

One thing most people don't know about me--I love to read obituaries. So many people have led such interesting lives. They die so quietly, but at some point have done amazing things or been so important to others. They are people that someone loved.

Back to Aunt Margaret. So she is gone, but her body is in a place that she loved. Our family church cemetary, Pleasant Grove Church built in 1913, on land that borders the Yates farm, and holds many of our ancestors, including her parents, grandparents and great grandparents also in the cemetary. In the middle picture, her grave site is just behind me, and our family farm begins on the other side of the pond. Really, when you think about the whole deal--that's a pretty fantastic ending.

mom had a bad cold, dad took the girls to the zoo

I think they had a great time, I seemed to have caught a short but hard hitting cold or flu starting on Friday and it killed my whole weekend. Scott was so sweet and took the girls to the zoo on Sunday so I could rest and get some sleep. They are SO loud that you can't really sleep when they are home. It was a beautiful warm day as you can tell, I think they had a great time except the petting zoo was closed for a special event.

artwork...on the floor!

too bad they didn't have washable crayons when we were kids--having kids now is so forgiving sometimes!

honestly, it's so nice to not have to worry about stuff like this, I can give them crayons and do the dishes or make dinner, then just clean up with a paper towel! yipee!

baby. BAAAABBBBYYYYY

It's so cute that we can't even get mad over the whining. The girls suddenly LOVE their babies. especially Tilly, she LOVES baby. yesterday in the car she dropped baby and I had to pull over go fish baby off the floor because she just cries and cries for BAABBBYYY. In the meantime, Scott has taught the girls to say baby A and baby B, and they understand who is A and who is B. We are waiting for yet to be named babies to become baby A and baby B. Now, back to the babies--the babies get diapered. The babies get put to bed. The babies get fed. The babies get their eyelashes pulled out too, and they get wild, wild rides in the stroller too.

Halloween 2008

Let me start by walking down memory lane with a picture of the girls in Oct. 2007.

And here are the little ladies out and about on Belvedere Lane on Friday night. What cute little bugs they made, and they weren't afraid to go up and ask for a treat--after some initial help from mom and dad. Poppy especially really liked getting something put into her pail, which daddy bought for them because mama forgot! And yes, they got to eat some of their candy--I couldn't resist!

doodles and kids

How cute are the girls with Ben and Catfish? Shelly even got all of them to siiitttt, staaayyy before she fed the boys. Apparently the girls thought EVERYONE had to sit before dinner. Catfish loves babies, and when the girls were wee babes Catfish would guard them, and just watch over them. For anyone who doesn't know, the dogs are labradoodles from Texas. And big.

new pix from our weekend trip to the LB

we hit a pumpkin patch at Tanaka Farms in Irvine. Whew--it was HOT, but we got some cute pix of the girls and their boyfriend AJ. And went to the stinky petting zoo, and then had lunch at Chik Fil A, which is a real treat when you live hours from the closest one!

my bi-weekly produce box delivery

I've been splurging for a few months and am getting every 2 weeks a "box" delivery from Planet Organics. I actually really like the service and looked into alot of different CSA subscriptions but settled on this one in part b/c they will also deliver organic grocery items. My last delivery was a bit messed up but included this beautiful yellow/cheddar cauliflower. It was as tasty as it is pretty. We have had the most amazing fruits and veggies this summer, really amazing flavors. PO is based in Sonoma, and they drive down and deliver everything to us on Thursday. I would encourage anyone to participate in this type of a service, it is expensive, but really convenient and the items you get are so much more flavorful than anything you get in the grocery store-including Whole Foods. See list a list of csa options in your area visit http://www.localharvest.org/ and put in your zip code.

The girls love the new tv too--unfortunately. DJ Lance looks awesome in HD! Look at Tilly, she looks like a forlorn little lady sitting on her stool. The girls are just starting to love on their dollies, over the weekend we made little diapers for their dollies and they will actually lay them down on a changing pad and throw some wipes on top of them. So cute!

Pumpkin stuff from Grammy!

Grammy sent the girls some adorable pumpkin sweaters and tight which they already wore on a play date.
Poppy looks like a little golfer! I hope we can swing by the pumpkin patch this year, maybe even this weekend so we can do comparison pictures. Yesterday we finally made it the Bay Area Discovery Museum in Sausalito with our friend Babs and her twin boys. Wow, it was a beautiful hot day and the kids had a great time. Unfortunately, I just sent my pocket digital back for repair, so I couldn't take pictures as I refuse to lug the big expensive digital when I am out alone with the girls. I can't watch 2 crazy toddlers+a diaper bag+a camera. Maybe if I was 25. But no worries, I think I am going to join so I'll go back with Scott in tow and get some great pictures!

Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in GGP

night night

I know a few people have wondered about the crib tent we had to purchase a while ago to keep Poppy in her crib--so I'm including a pix. It's really clever, and lines the entire inside of the crib and goes under the mattress, and then pops up on top so she can still stand. I thought she would hate it but she seems fine with it. Only some parents understand the terror of hearing a loud thump early in the morning, followed by the pitter patter of little feet running around the room right above your head. You should have seen us both shoot out of our warm bed that morning!

Then I've included a picture of Tilly and how she falls asleep. She rubs her little face with a paci, which by the way we have successfully removed from their grasp except for crib time. They give them to us in the morning and only get them for naps and night time.
Next stop...big girl beds!
